Immanent Critique in Thucydides’ Mytilenean Debate and Melian Dialogue

This article investigates social critique in Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War. Two famous Thucydidean episodes are focus: Mytilenean Debate Book III and Melian Dialogue V History. These interpreted here as inquiries assuming shape subversive transformative criticism: immanent critique. Immanent aims at shifting horizons meaning contexts, philosophers practicing this kind criticism understand themselves physicians a failing society. In work, particular object is formed by varying dominant moral ordering principles. Debate, it principle expediency (τò ξύμφορον) that rules, whereas governing normative safety survival (σωτηρíα). each episode, contending perspective introduced for purpose undermining dominating principle.
